VTech has announced the newest version of their educational kids’ tablet, the InnoTab 2. The InnoTab 2 is a 5” tablet that places an emphasis on parental control of content, keeping a pretty strict fence around what kids can access using the device.
It’s actually being branded as a toy, masquerading as a tablet. On the software side, the InnoTab 2 comes pre-loaded with a photo viewer, a video player, an eReader and several games. The on-board camera rotates when taking pictures, and photos can be edited using the basic provided editing software, which allows for the addition of a few fun visual effects.
Games have an educational tilt to them, and use the motion sensor on the InnoTab 2. Games come in app form or in cartridge form – either way, the only games (or any software, for that matter) that will be running on the InnoTab 2 is the stuff that VTech allows, which is the focal point of parental control – there is no way to gain Web access using the tablet, which is why it’s considered a toy first, and a tablet second. Think of it as a starter tablet for the young ones.
The InnoTab 2 also includes an mp3 player, along with 2 GB of on-board storage. There is an SD card slot that supports up to 32 GB cards.
The VTech InnoTab 2 is available now for pre-order, and costs about $80. The InnoTab 2 is scheduled to ship August 10th.
