Like many other Disney apps, Ariel’s Musical Surprise thrives off the use of physical toys along with the app. This app uses Jakks’ DreamPlay toys, which are launching in part with the release of this app. DreamPlay is a part of both the toys and the app itself – kids can use the camera of a mobile device to scan their toys, which will bring them into the app for the kids to interact with in new ways.
This includes a light-up dress that girls can wear. As a result, the app will have dance activities along to songs from The Little Mermaid. There are also musical instrument toys that girls can scan and play around with on the app to create music and play rhythm mini games. Scanning the Mermaid Kitchen brings up recipes and sound effects, while Ariel’s Keyboard Vanity unlocks more rhythm games on the app.
The app itself is filled with scenes and characters from The Little Mermaid, along with mini games, songs, and activities. There’s a lot of content there even without the toys, but the DreamPlay-enabled toys round out the experience.
The toys range from $15 to $90, and will be available at Toys’R’Us sometime this fall. Ariel’s Musical Surprise is available now on the iTunes App Store.
