VTech Launches MobiGo Handheld Gaming System
The VTech MobiGo is an innovative handheld that also offers touch-screen technology with a full tactile slide open Qwerty keyboard. Perfect for those parents who are not ready to commit to a Nintendo DSi.
We got to spend some time with the MobiGo and I have to tell you we were sucked in. The Shrek game was lots of fun and the ease of use is perfect for kids for any age. It is also very durable and will come in both pink/purple and blue/yellow. I also liked sliding the keyboard up and out it seemed like it withstood it pretty well. The touch-screen was also very intuitive. So if you feel if your child is not yet ready for DSi but is still nagging you for something that is a handheld system, the MobiGo may be the way to go if you are looking for a fun yet just a tad educational device. There will also be a diverse assortment of games available for the MobiGo too: Ben 10, Disney Fairies, Dora the Explorer, Shrek, Toy Story 3, NASCAR, and more.
MobiGo Touch Learning System is for Ages 3 to 7yrs and will retail for $59.99. Expect it to hit shelves and online retailers around August.

All these devices can’t compete with the iPod Touch. I invested in Leapsters, Tag pens and all the other geeky crap out there -but at the end of the day, the kid loves the iPod better than any of them. Plus, the price of apps is much cheaper. A simple Leapster game is $24.99, a GOOD iPod game for toddlers is a buck or two.
Sure, it may not be as sturdy (get a good case), but the end result is better, plus it’ll do their movies and music.

Compared to the iPad, this thing has more bang per buck.

Way to go VTech. Rip off Flip Video’s name, and almost make it look identical! Props! …

As an m-learning evangelist/researcher, this looks like an awesome innovation towards affordable and portable learning technologies. I think if the platform were made open, it has the potential become a cult device in the development community – a cheap, programmable digital pad.

Some of my posts have gone the same way all week, no matter which browser I use. This one’s from the iPhone app and based on experience it has a 50% chance of making it through.

No flash … no multitasking, I’d wager; I’d say you’re right!

I like the aesthetics of this device more than the iPad as well.

@ Chris @ New Reformation I know. I feel bad that post went up though. I wasn’t expecting it too. I flagged it myself, which is why it went away. I hate trolls to much to intentionally turn into one.

@MostAmazing Well if this thing ends up having a life span similar to the V.Smile. (The V.Smile is still being made too so keep that in mind.) Then it very well might out sell the iPad in the long run.

This thing is $60 and designed with a toddler’s destructive nature in mind.
The cheapest ipod touch is $200 and and will break just by a 4 year old looking at it.
Not to mention that this things interface is designed for use by a young mind with less refined motor skills that may not be able to adequately type using the tiny ipod virtual keyboard.

What’s the intended age range for this?
My 5 year old grandson can kick butt on a 360 (Gears of War 2, etc), and DS. This wouldn’t hold his attention for more than 30 seconds.

@guroth Have you ever let a 4 year old use your iPod…probably not. My friends 3 year old uses his dad’s iPhone and gets around it just fine. And since most kids don’t learn the alphabet till preschool/kindergarden the keyboard isn’t much of an issue.

My 4 year old has v-tech fake computers and handhelds. She wants what mom and dad has. She’ll use her vtech for 5 minutes. She’ll use the iPhone till the battery is dead. And she’s been using it since she was 2 with no breakage.

@xKNGx
This is a mistake. Kids don’t want this, their mates would take the piss. Hardly matters how old they are, if they want a handheld games device, they’ll want a PSP or DS of some variation.
